Artistry as catharsis
Britney Symone gently unravels and processes her inner world through art. Renewal and clarity of self find her on the other side of this heart-led practice.
I am a multifaceted work in progress
By blending a career in graphic design with her passion for traditional artistry, Britney Symone creates vivid reflections of her experiences with a focus on mental and spiritual wellbeing.
Whether it’s through digital artwork, thoughtful typographic design, photography, or luminous sculptural pieces, she engages in self-discovery and emotional vulnerability by revealing a piece of her inner world to the viewer.
You Are Your First Home
In her debut solo exhibition, Britney Symone honors the immense strength found in softness by blending fine art, design, photography, writing, sound, and installation into vivid reflections of her experiences, with a focus on mental and spiritual wellbeing.
Her process is woven with intention and a one-of-a-kind physicality. The intricacy of the materials lend themselves to the delicate, eclectic, and sometimes messy nature of looking deeply at oneself and meeting them with loving kindness.
This body of work was displayed at NorthStar Church of the Arts in 2025 and at the Durham Arts Council in 2026.
A solo exhibition by Britney Symone
You Are Your First Home serves as a therapeutic invitation to explore the gift of self-discovery, nurtured through an intuitive creative process.
All are welcomed to return to themselves, find an oasis of inner love, release stories that don’t belong, and tap into their eternal light.
Going Within, 2024
Multimedia; Digital Painting, Beads
What I hold dear to my heart as truth is the fact that I have everything I need within me. I have all the intention, all the validation, all the joy, all the passion, and all the love I need right here within. I invite you to do the same. Thank your past self for getting you where you are — whether it's exactly where you wanna be or not. It's where you're meant to be. Trust that you can change your life.

The mirror of another is only as clear as your own.

Embracing Internal Shadows
All the photography featured was shot by the talented Nori McDuffie and Derrick Davis, both based in Durham, NC.
An uncomfortable aspect of self-exploration lies in the challenge of honestly examining what we’re ashamed of and how that shame holds us back from growth and potential.
The traits we value in others are reflective of what we value in ourselves. Conversely, the flaws we dislike in another is indicative of what we dislike in ourselves. The mirror of another is only as clear as our own.
We must be willing to dive deep into our own abyss in order to understand another’s.
Letting someone be a witness to our darkness is a necessary risk in exchange for loving community.
The Art of Noticing, 2025
Multimedia; Glass beads, Polaroids, Semi-precious stones
This collection of photography was shot primarily overseas across years with reverence and gratitude for the present moment. With their own unique set of beadwork attached, each photograph is anchored together as a string of memories shaped by curiosity.
It is Enough to Exist, 2025
Multimedia; Digital painting, Textiles, Sculpture
A reminder of worthiness despite productivity and that catharsis and alchemy are a practice. Anything you feel can be made beautiful if you view it with radical acceptance and grace.
Created over the span of months as a cathartic practice during the artist’s recurring depressive episodes, this piece asserts the power in allowing oneself to simply experience the low points of emotion without trying to force through them.

Opening Reception
Day of Wellness
A homecoming celebration that invites community to tap into their mental, physical, and spiritual beings.
Kicking off with a short journaling session, the main event included an hour long yin yoga class taught by the artist, and concluded with a half hour sound bath meditation from a local sound healer, Shalice. Afterwards, visitors were invited to browse the gallery while enjoying food and music from local DJ’s.
Echoes of Impact
“Thank you for doing the hard things - showing me that can do it too.”
“I am so inspired and moved to tears of triumph, grief, and release.”
“I walked in and felt held, cradled into a space that was cradling you.”
The Charcoal Collection
A collection of digital art studies created to mimic the raw texture of charcoal, inspired by the tenuous, impermanent nature of life.
This body of work continues the motif in my work which challenges the idea that Black women cannot be soft and ethereal. The brushes used lended themselves to a style that evolved into something more loose and candid than previous work.

Child of the Dream
In the fall of 2018, I had the pleasure of illustrating the cover of Sharon Robinson’s coming-of-age memoir chronicling the events of 1963 — the year she turned 13 and a critical year for the Civil Rights movement. This is the story of how one girl finds her voice in the fight for justice and equality.
The Only Direction is Forward, 2018
I painted this piece as a homage to those before us, who paved the long, brutal road for Black civil rights in America. It functions as a reminder that the Movement is not over. A history forgotten is one repeated, and it is our responsibility remember how far we’ve come so we can continue to push further.
This original artwork was painted in July 2018 before being discovered by Elizabeth Parisi, a creative director at Scholastic Inc., who contacted me about an opportunity to rework the piece for the cover of baseball legend Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon Robinson’s upcoming book.
It was incredibly fitting to rework this piece and share it in the context of a woman whose childhood was shaped by the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. I am so grateful to be able to share my work in connection to such an important story.
The Soft Collection
A collection of digital artwork created with the underlying narrative that demands we let Black women be soft, on both micro and macro levels.
My work evolved into its current narrative with the piece Let Black Women Be Soft, 2018. It comments on the stereotypes that women of color are faced with, challenging the idea that they cannot be emotional and delicate while simultaneously standing strong in those traits. The signature tears were born of this stream of thought.
